Relations between Churches differ from one Asian country to another, and an appropriate form of ecumenical association in one country might not be the answer in others. What we need is, together with Christians of other Churches, to open ourselves anew to the movement and guidance of the Spirit.

We should ask ourselves, how can we incarnate the Church in Asia? This seems to call for a deepening of our experiences in Communion, so that we will be able to witness to the Gospel. This calls for the formation of the laity to be true disciples of Jesus in the world. Furthermore, we need to promote a greater commitment to the process of inculturation of all aspects of our lives, with the spirit of freedom of the children of God.

The Peoples of Asia, in their vast majority, have a deep religious experience, which we must learn to know and appreciate. The evangelization of Asia is, first of all, a dialogue of life with all believers whose experience already brings them closer to God, Who is the Origin of all things. Our deepest conviction is that the Gospel can contribute something profound and vital, to the men and women of Asia.

In Asia the home of the great contemplative traditions, the dialogue of religious experience is of utmost importance. We would have a message for Asia only when our Asian brethren see in us the marks of God-realized persons. This dialogue is not opposed to the mission, but an integral part of the evangelizing mission of the Church which aims at making herself fully present as and when God wills, to all persons and peoples.

The Church in Asia continues to be the prophetic voice of our people who suffer on account of this globalization phenomenon but the responsibility of exposing the truth of exploitation by the First World Countries is and should not however be confined only to us Asian Pastors and Asian Christians. There is an equally urgent need also to conscientize our brothers in the Episcopate and Catholic Faithful of First World countries regarding their own social responsibility to speak out on our behalf.

The Church has adapted herself to local cultures whenever possible in order to evangelize people more effectively. Today we are asking that the Church do in Asia what she did in Europe, to wit, allow the process of inculturation to take place with more freedom on the part of the Local Churches. Guidelines will have to be drawn up, true, to forestall aberrations; but her rich history in handling heresies and schisms should stand her well in the issuance of those guidelines and safeguards.

The Asian situation - cultural, religious and social - is relatively congenial to the preaching of the Good News of the Kingdom of God preached by Jesus Christ and rendered present in His person and life, as it is fulfilling the aspirations and hopes of the Asian people steeped in the misery of poverty. Hence the Church should take it as its supreme task.

As member of the Church, which is reviving after great sufferance's, I wish to turn my attention to the local Churches in Asia that are still being persecuted. I feel that our solidarity to our persecuted brothers and sisters must not be lacking.

India provides a particularly soft target. The Christian missions are welcome to open their purse strings in the Islamic and Communist countries of Asia. But the missions there are barred from winning new converts. Hindu India, drowned in poverty and suffering from cultural self-forgetfulness, is the only country in Asia which provides the quid pro quo.

We should show compassion to Christians. They are very inoffensive, they are very dear. Very rarely, they have small churches here and there. There are people who make fun of them and some who attempt to batter them. They are striving to protect their beliefs in Allah and to express their love for Allah under very difficult conditions. You should be very compassionate towards them. Treat them with compassion and love. Our brothers and sisters should protect and watch over them everywhere.

Evangelization in Asia is more challenging than ever due to the revolution in communications technologies and mass media. These innovations vastly expand our potential to reach many more people, but the Church often fails to prioritize its media opportunities, so we miss moments of grace to share the Good News through media.

The main challenges facing the Church in Asia in her pastoral care of migrants are: violation of human rights; language difficulties; social injustice and economic unbalance; interreligious dialogue; consider migrants not as objects of evangelisation but as the subjects of mission.

The insistence of the personal rather than territorial aspect of evangelization is essential for the very existence and flourishing of Oriental Churches. Accepting this reality we should allow all these Churches to grow hand in hand with mutual respect and collaboration so that the territorial demarcations do not suffocate the Christian message which these Churches are trying to communicate, each in its own way, naturally adding new dimensions to the cultural and ethnic diversity of Asia.

In our situation, one cannot share the Good News in a managerial way. The evangelizer and the church have to be sacramental signs of faith. We must embody in our lives the Beatitudes. In a religious Asia, people of other faiths value the Beatitudes. Those sent on missions must embody the values of the Beatitudes. People spontaneously recognize the message in the messenger. Life of witness is a spirituality.
