A member of the Republican Party, he represented Florida's 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018. Following his successful reelection as governor, DeSantis announced on May 24, 2023, his bid for President of the United States in the 2024 United States presidential election, and is continuing to serve as governor during his campaign.
