He the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), to victory in the the general election on March 14, 2004 and a subsequent victory in 2008. He was replaced as leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) by w:Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba on 4 February 2012.
