Francisca Nneka Okeke (born october 14th,1956) is a Nigerian physicist. She is a Professor of Physics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and first female head of a department in the University.She is known for her pioneering research and for being a trailblazer for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in Nigeria. Francisca decided to focus on her research interests: solid earth geomagnetism, atmospheric Physics, and climate variability. She primarily studies the daily differences in ion currents in the upper atmosphere and how those affect the Earth’s magnetic field.To date, she has published over 100 papers in several prestigious global journals and has written 20 articles and 15 books. Her research focuses on the impact of solar activity and ion currents in the Earth's upper atmosphere on the planet's magnetic field and climate. Okeke has authored educational materials to improve physics learning at various levels in Nigeria and supports and advocates for women in STEM careers.
