The only productive way to answer “What should I do now?” is to first tackle the question of “Who should I become?”

First, decide who you want to be. This holds at any level — as an individual, as a team, as a community, as a nation. What do you want to stand for? What are your principles and values? Who do you wish to become?

Why else do any of this if not to become who we want to be?

And the first question for a leader is: "Who do we intend to be?" not “What are we going to do?”

You need to know who you want to be.

Who do I really want to become?,” their work indicated that it is better to be a scientist of yourself, asking smaller questions that can actually be tested — “Which among my various possible selves should I start to explore now? How can I do that?” Be a flirt with your possible selves.* Rather than a grand plan, find experiments that can be undertaken quickly. “Test-and-learn,” Ibarra told me, “not plan-and-implement.

Become who you are.

Become who you are by learning who you are.

Some 2,600 years ago the ancient Greek poet Pindar wrote, “Become who you are by learning who you are.” What he meant is the following: You are born with a particular makeup and tendencies that mark you as a piece of fate. It is who you are to the core. Some people never become who they are; they stop trusting in themselves; they conform to the tastes of others, and they end up wearing a mask that hides their true nature. If you allow yourself to learn who you really are by paying attention to that voice and force within you, then you can become what you were fated to become — an individual, a Master.

when we decide who we want to become — our definition of greatness, our Meaningful Mission — then that becomes our identity. And when our identity is clear, then our behaviors are easier to establish.

It is not enough to do, one must also become.

If we decide to think, feel, and act as the kind of person we want to be, we will become that person. We won’t just be behaving “like” that person; we will be that person.

Decide who you want to be, and then do that work.
