Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. (13 November 1929 – 19 March 2014) was an American pastor who founded the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), an independent Baptist church based in Topeka, Kansas known for its incendiary protests against gays. In 2013, he was reportedly excommunicated from the church and allegedly abandoned his anti-homosexual views, dying in 2014.
