I don’t think that I would call it a whirlwind in terms of our relationship. Obviously there have been layers attached to how public it has become after we had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing. But no, I think we were able to really have so much time just to connect and we never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other, even though we were obviously doing a long distance relationship. So it’s — we made it work.

A little distance had opened between us, almost unnoticed, rarely acknowledged. We made love infrequently. The couch was for sleep at the end of exhausting days. I confided in her less often. Perhaps that is the fate of all marriages.

But she spoke as though it were a matter of weeks rather than of years; as though, too, before our parting we had been firm friends. Questions as yet unasked demanded attention. Innocent remarks and askance looks from others, a moment of contact too long in public-a note from a grocer-everything was a reminder that they were, in some contexts, living a secret. Everything was made fraught. They had never said, We are lovers, so they had never had to say, We will not disclose our relationship to all, we will hide from some. But it had been clear for months and months that this was the case.

That's the strange thing about love. One minute you can have your tongue up someone's arse, and the next you can't even communicate.

I've thought a lot about it. The truth is, sometimes too much can happen in a relationship, and then there's nothing anyone can do or say. It's broken.

We broke up mostly because we didn't have a manager and everyone was on different drugs. I don't take them so it was a bit weird for me.

Another reality about relationships is that they are never static. All of us experience changes in relationships but a few stop to analyse why a relationship gets better or worse.

And while it never felt like love or community, it had almost felt like not being alone.

Even walking side by side for a long time, some relationships never touch the heart.
