Alberto Ángel Fernández (born 2 April 1959) is an Argentine politician, lawyer and professor who is President of the Justicialist Party. He previously served as president of Argentina between 2019 and 2023. He defeated Mauricio Macri in the 2019 Argentine general election on a left-wing Kirchnerist platform, with Macri's predecessor Cristina Fernández de Kirchner serving as Vice President in his administration. He oversaw responses to the 2018–present Argentine monetary crisis that began under his predecessor and the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Argentine economy recovered from the COVID-19 recession, inflation worsened during his tenure and he became unpopular. He decided not to run for re-election, and was replaced by the libertarian populist Javier Milei.
