English association football player and manager (1920-1999)
Sir Alfred Ernest "Alf" Ramsey (22 January 1920 – 28 April 1999) was an English footballer and manager who, as manager of the England national football team from 1963 to 1974, guided England to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Ramsey's England team also came third in the 1968 European Championship, and reached the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup and the 1972 European Championship respectively. He was knighted in 1967 in recognition of England's World Cup win the previous year.
