African American man who was a victim of police violence in the United States, killed by Derek Chauvin
George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was an African American man who was an amateur rapper, actor and robber. He was murdered during a police arrest, after a store clerk alleged he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill. A series of protests against police brutality, especially towards black people, soon developed across the United States and internationally. Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, one of four police officers who arrived on the scene, was convicted of Floyd's murder in April 2021.
