O how feeble is man's power,
That if good fortune fall,
Cannot add another hour,
Nor a lost hour recall!
But come bad chance,
And we join to'it our strength,
And we teach it art and length,
Itself o'er us to'advance.

Feeling comes in aid
Of feeling, and diversity of strength
Attends us, if but once we have been strong.

We do not what we ought, What we ought not, we do, And lean upon the thought That chance will bring us through.

We acquire the strength we have overcome.

Fortune has dealt us this adversity:
Some malign aspect or disposition
Of Saturn in some adverse position
Has brought it on us; nothing's to be done:
It stood thus in our stars when we were born;
The long and short of it is this: Endure.

Alas!
We give our destiny from our own hands,
And trust to those most frail of all frail things,
The chances of humanity.

Let us, then, be up and doing.
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!

Chance makes us known to others and to ourselves.

Fury our Judgement charms,
And we conceive it brave to dye in Arms.

Press on! If Fortune play thee false
To-day, tomorrow she'll be true;
Whom now she sinks she now exalts,
Taking old gifts and granting new,
The wisdom of the present hour
Makes up the follies past and gone;
To weakness, strength succeeds, and power
From frailty springs! Press on, press on!

O, wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion.

Do not be afraid; our fate
Cannot be taken from us; it is a gift.

Comrades and friends! for ours is strength
Has brooked the test of woes;
O worse-scarred hearts! these wounds at length
The Gods will heal, like those.
