Where history means nothing. Lessons are forgotten. Memories – of humanity, of all that is humane – are lost.

Myth is the nothing that is everything.

Anything but history, for history must be false.

With the destruction of history, contemporary events themselves retreat into a remote and fabulous realm of unverifiable stories, uncheckable statistics, unlikely explanations and untenable reasoning.

History is idle gossip about a happening whose truth is lost the instant it has taken place.

History has no meaning.

Faith is a myth and beliefs shift like mists on the shore; thoughts vanish; words, once pronounced, die; and the memory of yesterday is as shadowy as the hope of to-morrow.... In this world — as I have known it — we are made to suffer without the shadow of a reason, of a cause or of guilt.... There is no morality, no knowledge and no hope; there is only the consciousness of ourselves which drives us about a world that... is always but a vain and floating appearance.... A myth is something that has never happened, but is happening all the time.

A myth is, of course, not a fairy story. It is the presentation of facts belonging to one category in the idioms appropriate to another. To explode a myth is accordingly not to deny the facts but to re-allocate them.

They do not realize that a myth is dead if it no longer lives and grows. Our myth has become mute, and gives no answers.

The lack of a sense of history is the damnation of the modern world.

I wish to make it clear that ‘history’ in the sense in which most people speak of it simply does not exist; and this is at least one reason why I say that it has no meaning.

History meant nothing, because the only continuity was human stupidity.
