The Rgvedic texts were read in the political context of nineteenth-century philology, which has been outlined in chapter 1. But frustrating as it might some- times be, Western scholars must address the suspicions of the Indigenists—at least of those that are open to dialogue and exchange—given the neccessity of examining our own attitudes and biases made incumbent on us by the Orientalist critique.
