About Patrice de MacMahon

Marie Edme Patrice Maurice de MacMahon (13 June 1808 – 17 October 1893), was a French soldier and statesman. For his military services, he was appointed a by Emperor Napoleon III, and awarded the title Duke of Magenta. Following the French defeat in the he became the head of the army of the nascent French Third Republic, under President , and in May 1871 led the , the bloody week-long military campaign which defeated the and placed the city under the authority of the Republic. He served as from 1873 to 1875 and as from 1875 to 1879.
