A new generation of Christians is being called to help build a world in which God's gift of life is welcomed, respected and cherished-not rejected, feared as a threat and destroyed. A new age in which love is not greedy or self-seeking, but pure, faithful and genuinely free, open to others, respectful of their dignity, seeking their good, radiating joy and beauty - a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption that deaden our souls and poison our relationships.

The unrealistic demand that everything the Church teaches be lived completely and in all its fullness fails to take into account humanity as it actually is...There exists in every man a certain tension between that which the Church recognizes as what the Christian ought to be and do and that which the average Christian normally achieves.

Hay dos tipos de aflicción: una, que ha perdido la esperanza, que ya no confía en el amor y la verdad, y por ello abate y destruye al hombre por dentro; pero también existe la aflicción provocada por la conmoción ante la verdad y que lleva al hombre a la conversión, a oponerse al mal. Esta tristeza regenera, porque enseña a los hombres a esperar y amar de nuevo. Un ejemplo de la primera aflicción es Judas, quien — profundamente abatido por su caída — pierde la esperanza y lleno de desesperación se ahorca. Un ejemplo del segundo tipo de aflicción es Pedro que, conmovido ante la mirada del Señor, prorrumpe en un llanto salvador: las lágrimas labran la tierra de su alma. Comienza de nuevo y se transforma en un hombre nuevo.
