Even from a young age I undersood that when a girl is unlikable, a girl is a problem. I also understand that I wasn't being intentionally mean. I was being honest (admittedly, without tact), and I was being human. It is either a blessing or a curse that those are rarely likable qualities in a woman.

All too often, when we see injustices, both great and small, we think, That's terrible, but we do nothing. We say nothing. We let other people fight their own battles. We remain silent because silence is easier. Qui tacet consentire videtur is Latin for 'Silence gives consent.' When we say nothing, when we do nothing, we are consenting to these trespasses against us.

The moment we see a pop artifact offering even a sliver of something different — say, a woman who isn’t a size zero or who doesn't treat a man as the center of the universe — we cling to it desperately because that representation is all we have.
