But the racism in the island, nobody wanted to deal with because I was told "no hay racismo en Puerto Rico." But that was not true. Color, caste, class, were major contradictions, even within left-wing political groups.

There is a strange kind of tragic enigma associated with the problem of racism. No one, or almost no one, wishes to see themselves as racist; still racism persists, real and tenacious.

It was an interesting phenomenon, being of mixed race, especially in the eighties. And actually, things haven’t changed all that much, because people still don’t like to talk about race. The inhibition around discussing racism and what it means to be a person of color in this country is profound. Growing up, there was no space to talk about racism. If anyone brought that up at school, suddenly that person was a troublemaker. And as a mixed race kid who had a lot of mixed race friends, if anyone talked about racism we were held up like little trophies. Literally, people would point to us and ask, “How can there be racism? Look at all these biracial kids running around. How is there racism when we see a melting pot?” We were the biological representatives of a post-racial society, and that created an incredible silencing effect…

No one cared about the facts. My stance was all they cared about...We always say that some members of the public are unaware of the truth and can be easily duped. But I’m concerned that there are also officials who are unaware of the truth and can just as easily be manipulated.

They didn’t even understand the science they presumed to criticize.

No one wanted to hear that people other than themselves might be complicated, that no one was ever just one thing, no history ever just one version.

Majorities and minorities cannot rightfully be taken at all into account in deciding questions of justice. And all talk about them, in matters of government, is mere absurdity.

And I was angry because the media took racism seriously - or pretended to - but with sexism, they rarely bothered even to pretend.

No one can tell the whole story of anything.
