I have ridden in your cart, driver,
waved my nude arms at villages going by,
learning the last bright routes, survivor
where your flames still bite my thigh
and my ribs crack where your wheels wind.
A woman like that is not ashamed to die.
I have been her kind.

We make a stage set out of my past
and stuff painted puppets into it.
We make a bridge toward my future
and I cry to you: I will be steel!
I will build a steel bridge over my need!
I will build a bomb shelter over my heart!
But my future is a secret.
It is as shy as a mole.

سألتُ سترته الزرقاء.
لا جواب.
كان الصمت ينهمر من دفاتره.
ثم سقط من لسانه
وجاء وجلس بيننا
وخنق حلقي
وذبح يقيني
مزّق السجائر في فمي.
تبادلنا كلمات عمياء
ولم أبك،
ولم أتوسّل،
تنفّست الظلمة في قلبي،
وذلك الهواء الذي كان جميلًا
تحول إلى فرن غاز.

أتحبني؟
يا للعبث!
