She previously served on the Boston City Council as the first Taiwanese American council member and first Asian American woman council member in Boston's history. From January 2016 to January 2018, she served as president of the council and was its first woman of color president. In September 2020, Wu announced her candidacy for the 2021 Boston mayoral election. In November 2021, Wu became the first woman and person of color elected to the mayoral office.
