I feel that autonomy as an artist is very important and I have to be able to do what makes me feel excited. If I do not feel it, nobody will. So I gladly took the risk and made this album because I can!.

My work is for my own pleasure and fulfilment. I like to give form to my emotional and visual responses and to explore themes which reflect my attitudes as a socially concious woman artist.

My artwork is about resistance, de-colonization, self-definition, self-empowerment and survival. I draw upon myths, family folklore, and indigenismo (a native way of being). I reinterpret and register all these as cultural, visual, iconographic manifestations of my identity. As the subject matter of my art, I exalt a lineage of women, energized from a sacred space of creation.

I think art is different. I think you have to be who you are. My art happens to be very integrally linked with my environmental concerns. But to be an artist, you have to be true to who you are.

I painted like that because I wanted to get through to something new - a kind of painting that was my own.

Authenticity goes a long way, so keep being yourself and your art will speak for itself.

My art is the essence of my experience, not a representation of it.

I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art.

What the really great artists do is they're entirely themselves. They're entirely themselves, they've got their own vision, they have their own way of fracturing reality, and if it's authentic and true, you will feel it in your nerve endings.

My art is rooted in a single reflection: why am I not as others are? ..my art gives meaning to my life.

I never say I do political art. Nor do I do feminist art. I’m a woman who’s a feminist, who makes art. But I think what work becomes visible and what work remains absent is always a result of historical circumstance, you know—hard work, to some degree, and social relations.

I depict my life and experiences in my works of art.

By the time I got a permit I found that I liked being independent, that I like to do productions that I think are valuable . I did not want to feel that I had left South Africa, my parents and a comfortable life to do rubbishy work

Independence has always been a leitmotif for me and has been reflected in my career choices, my positioning in the artistic scene, and more generally, in my line of conduct. However, this really came to fruition when I was able to become financially independent; from there, I could not only impose my leitmotif, but also build it in a sustainable way
