We shall demand complete toleration for the expression of any and every doctrine under the sun, even - and here is the acid test of our belief in toleration - of those doctrines which would forbid the expression of any except themselves. We must, in a word, be tolerant even of those views which deny tolerance. [...] Those who believe in freedom may not deny men the right to advocate unfreedom. We cannot in the name of a principle take action which denies the principle. Hence those of us who care for liberty must forgo the use of the weapon upon which its opponents pride themselves.

That some contrivance has been devised or some increment of power obtained which will enabled human beings to move faster … or later more rapidly the position of matter in space than before is in the contemporary world regarded as a sufficient reason for making use of it. Nobody ever asks whether the use of the contrivance, the employment of the power, will make us happier, wiser, or better.

If it is, then the sooner they give up the pretence of playing with public affairs and return to private life the better. If they cannot make a job of the House of Commons, let them at least make something of their own houses. If they cannot learn to save men from the destruction which incurable male mischievousness bids fair to bring upon them, let women at least learn to feed them, before they destroy themselves.
