religion is the artifice, you know, the building, after God has left it sometimes, like Elvis has left the building. You hold onto religion, you know, rules, regulations, traditions. I think what God is interested in is people's hearts, and that's hard enough.

God’s not here. Somebody’s got to fill in.

I'm a non-believer, but I can't help but think that what we've created as a society when we killed God is a vacuum that inevitably has to be filled. And when it gets filled, it gets filled by a new religion which is what social justice and intersectionality and all of that now is. They have priests. They have inquisitions. The only thing they don't have in that religion is redemption and forgiveness. [...] If we don't have forgiveness, I don't understand how this world is gonna work. I honestly don't.

Traditionally, people are always supposed to feel empty, devastated, when a god leaves them. Nobody seems to wonder how the god might feel. Leaving the only people who almost understood.

You have to create the space for God to fill.

When human beings banish God from the world, they make Gods of themselves.

Religions get lost as people do.

When God is absent, pride fills the void.

Isn't a religion supposed to be like red and green lights, for people? I mean we're going to do what we want anyway, most of us. But at least you go and you feel bad for what you did... Now what? Now we can do anything, so why go to church at all? That's why Reform Judaism is dead; it doesn't stand for anything. There's got to be more to religion than coffee cake. Or let's say, yogurt and fruit now...

It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains.

Some persons, instead of making a religion for their God, are content to make a god of their religion.

Religion has not tended to create seekers or searchers, has not tended to create honest, humble people who trust that God is always beyond them. We aren’t focused on the great mystery. Religion has, rather, tended to create people who think they have God in their pockets, people with quick, easy, glib answers. That’s why so much of the West is understandably abandoning religion. People know the great mystery cannot be that simple and facile.

Organised religion is something I find hard to follow.

Religion is just a controlling tool they employ and adhere to when convenient.
