I’m an African-American woman. I’ve faced resistance. I can understand challenges. These are philosophical differences. We ought to be able to disagree on issues.

Maybe the goal is that one day we won’t have to identify people as the ‘first’ or the ‘only. Hopefully, because of me, it will be a little easier for them.

I’m pro-choice, but I only talk about that when I’m asked about it by a reporter. It’s already federal law, so it’s not an issue for me. It’s not my platform, and the fact that I have that position doesn’t mean I’m not a Republican.

This is America, the land of opportunity where all dreams may come true.

I am honored to occupy this place in the history of our nation and in our great state. Words cannot adequately express the elation and deep emotion that comes with this moment.

The position doesn’t intimidate me. If it serves as an incentive for other women and people of color to become involved in government and public policy, I’m happy to open that door.
