In most cases, people, even wicked people, are far more naive and simple-hearted than one generally assumes. And so are we.

In most cases, people, even the most vicious, are much more naive and simple-minded than we assume them to be. And this is true of ourselves too.

Then I realized that we all think we might be terrible people. But we only reveal this before we ask someone to love us. It is a kind of undressing.

Your assumptions about the lives of others are in direct relation to your naïve pomposity. Many people you believe to be rich are not rich. Many people you think have it easy worked hard for what they got. Many people who seem to be gliding right along have suffered and are suffering. Many people who appear to you to be old and stupidly saddled down with kids and cars and houses were once every bit as hip and pompous as you.

We can all pretend to be cynical and scheming, but when we’re faced with purity and innocence, the cynical mask drops off.

A naive man is nothing better than a fool. But you women contrive to be naive in such a way that in you it seems sweet, and gentle, and proper, and not as silly as it really is.

Just as we tend to assume that the world is as we see it, we naively suppose that people are as we imagine them to be.

Every true genius is bound to be naive.
