I peccati infatti hanno bisogno soprattutto del perdono di Dio, ma poi anche di una purificazione, da attuare quaggiù, oppure, dopo la morte, nel Purgatorio. L’assoluzione sacramentale nella confessione toglie la colpa e ridà l’amicizia con Dio, ma rimane il dovere della purificazione dell’impronta negativa lasciata dal male compiuto e di una riparazione. Ecco l’indulgenza, mediante la quale noi attingiamo dal tesoro della Chiesa, cioè dai meriti acquistati da Cristo, dalla Madonna e dai Santi. L’indulgenza si può ottenere una sola volta al giorno e può essere applicata anche per i nostri cari defunti aiutandoli nel loro processo di purificazione.
