I've been keeping a diary since I was about 11. If you don't keep a diary everything washes away. And you can live everything three times: you live it when you live it, you live it when you write it down, and you live it a third time when you re-read it. Though I have to say rereading my diary for publication was a depressing experience. You shouldn't look back.

For instance, there's a series of entries describing a trip to New Brunswick that I'm pretty sure I never took. It used to scare me, those recollections of things that never took place, but I've gotten used to it.

This study also compares the diary with other contemporary sources with a view to highlighting its limitations. The main argument here is that despite these limitations, these diaries still have a lot to offer historians and even literary critics (as well as other scholars such as anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists.
