The main advances made in the mining sector over the past two years have focused on improving the governance of the sector. In view of the significant challenges of the sector, the government has deemed it necessary to put in place a strategic framework that responds to new development challenges

We already have a strong mining industry and by building on this foundation, we can lead the way in producing green materials that are in high demand worldwide. The government and Ministry of Mines and Energy, in particular, need to ensure that our laws and policies support the growth of these new industries

Despite everything else, we have in fact managed to do some work in terms of the ministry and its oil and gas exploration and production. We have continued to invest in increasing the country’s oil and gas reserves.

In this regard appropriate skills development programmes should be put in place and integrated into the exploitation of the country’s mineral resources. Opportunities must also be made available for previously disadvantaged people, including women.

Our diversity as a people united is also our potential to transform our large deposits of mineral resources and use same for national development.

Greater beneficiation in the mineral sector requires collaboration from all stakeholders in terms of, among other things, creating an enabling environment throughout the minerals and mining value chain.

We could lead the world in environmentally-responsible exploitation of vital seabed minerals. We have the engineers, the marine scientists, the ecologists, the finance industry. We have the offshore oil and gas expertise. We have high, respected environmental standards. ... A little push now means vast rewards in a few years’ time.

Beneficiation is crucial to ensure that the country maximises the benefits from its mineral resources, especially in terms of economic development and employment potential.

In the area of agriculture and solid minerals, we look at manufacturing, services, entertainment and all these are viable areas to expand them.

This is something we incredibly proud of and when we talk about women in business, we’re helping make it a reality. We’re helping create scale and impact. This year, mining especially what are termed green minerals. We have many technology projects and also projects around logistics.

The ministry has put in place the requisite legal and regulatory building blocks to fully industrialise Namibia; to strengthen its trade both locally, regionally, continentally and globally; and to vigorously enable small and medium enterprises to develop and flourish

The ministry also offers scholarships, programs, and training courses abroad in key areas where skill enhancement is crucial, especially in sectors and specialised fields. These courses are organised in cooperation with several friendly countries, including European and Asian nations, notably China, to exchange expertise.
