A wise man poor

The wise man does not lay up his own treasures.
The more he gives to others,
the more he has for his own.

The poor man is incapacitated from showing the virtue of generosity to anyone, though he may possess it in the highest degree; and gratitude that consists of disposition only is a dead thing, just as faith without works is dead.

How seldom, Friend! a good great man inherits Honour or wealth, with all his worth and pains! It sounds like stories from the land of spirits, If any man obtain that which he merits, Or any merit that which he obtains. . For shame, dear Friend! renounce this canting strain! … Greatness and goodness are not means, but ends!
