كان الفلاحون يجلُّونه وهم يعرفون أن في استطاعتهم اللجوء إليه، وكانوا يسرفون في ذلك، ولم يخيب (جنان) رجاءهم أبدا. لكن اعتراف الناس بالجميل -حتى الطيبين منهم- كالفاكهة؛ يجب جمعها في أوانها. أما إذا تُركت زمنًا على الشجرة، فلن تلبث أن تفسد. وعندما تمر بضعة شهور، يكون عملاء (جنان) قد ألفوا التفكير في أن هذه الخدمة إنما هي واجب يؤدَّى لهم. بل إنهم كانوا يميلون إلى الاعتقاد بأن (جنان) -وقد أظهر هذا السرور المتناهي لمساعدتهم- واجدٌ له منفعة في ذلك. وكان أرقهم شعورًا يعتبرون أنفسهم قد تخلصوا، إن لم يكن من الديون فعلى الأقل من الوفاء بالجميل، لو أهدوا إليه -يوم سوق البلد- أرنبًا بريا اصطادوه، أو سلة من بيض دجاجهم.
