Many people think that a strong woman is one who makes her own decisions alone, but that is not the case with me. My family is the source of my pride and power.

I happened to come from grandmothers and a mother who were not apologetic about being women.

I had a very strong mother and I learned from both my parents’ intellectual rigour, to have the courage of my convictions and to speak the truth.

So this has been my motto all my life and in whatever I did, by the way, I was the first woman to do this, the first woman to do that, so I was daring.

The strength of my ancestors and the women who gave birth to freedom and taught us the path of dignity motivated me to start on this road to the Colombian presidency.

Strong women- precious jewels all- their humanness is evident in their accessibility. We are able to enter into the spirit of these women and rejoice in their warmth and courage.

I was raised to have great parents, and I was raised to believe that I had power, as big or small as it was. It was there and it was to be utilized. That’s something that I want a lot of women to get the opportunity to feel.

I’m very close to my mum. She has a strong faith that gives her this amazing sense of peace. I admire her; she's a very strong woman.
