I hate war, I hate war.

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.

I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen two hundred limping exhausted men come out of line-the survivors of a regiment of one thousand that went forward forty-eight hours before. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.

What a terrible thing war is, what a terrible thing!

It is barely conceivable that there are people who like war.

I find war more hateful than ever, and I groan in spirit over every life lost and every home blasted.

I abhor unjust war. I abhor injustice and bullying by the strong at the expense of the weak, whether among nations or individuals. I abhor violence and bloodshed. I believe that war should never be resorted to when, or so long as, it is honorably possible to avoid it. I respect all men and women who from high motives and with sanity and self-respect do all they can to avert war. I advocate preparation for war in order to avert war; and I should never advocate war unless it were the only alternative to dishonor.

I just think war is fucked up

I never justify, sustain, or in any way or to any extent uphold this cruel, heartless, aimless unnecessary war.

It is well that war is so terrible, or we would grow too fond of it.

I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so.

To me the war was an abomination, a madness, a crime, and from the first moment onwards–more out of impulse than reflection–I inwardly rejected it and could never reconcile myself with it up to this very moment.
