One thing I didn't get about technical fields as a kid is that rigor is the standard ideas have to meet, not the source of them. The source is often the cheesiest sort of guessing.
It would be very hard to make yourself read a lot if you didn't like reading. Even if you made yourself "read" lots of books, you wouldn't do it with sufficient attention. So only people who enjoy reading will be able to write well.
If you want to get someone famous to speak at your event, you're much more likely to get them to agree if it's a Q&A session rather than a talk. A talk = a week of worry for those who are not professional talkers (e.g. politicians), whereas a Q&A session you just show up for.
