Fundamentalism thus begins as an internal dispute, with liberalizers or secularists within one’s own culture or nation. The vast majority, however, do not commit acts of violence, but simply try to revive their faith in a more conventional, lawful way.

A former Roman Catholic religious sister, she went from a conservative to a more liberal and mystical Christian faith. She attended St Anne's College, Oxford, while in the convent and majored in English. She left the convent in 1969.
