Man is dissolved in fictions of being and yet these fictions themselves always conceal a possible road back to man; hidden dissatisfaction may lead to the recovery of the authentic seriousness which becomes real only in existential presence and casts off the ruinous attitude of those who take life as it is and do what they please.

Už Platon pokládal za samozřejmé, že je třeba skrýt se ve zlých dobách a beznadějných poměrech a zůstat naživu. Ale pasivita ví, že je morálně vinna každým selháním, které zanedbává povinnost chopit se jakékoli možné aktivity k ochraně ohrožených, k ulehčení bezpráví, k odpírání zlu. V bezmocném podrobení zůstávalo vždy volné pole pro aktivitu, která sice nebyla bez nebezpečí, ale při obezřelosti mohla být účinná. Jednotlivec bude muset uznat, že promeškal-li úzkostlivě tuto příležitost, je morálně vinen.
