In our age, the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action.

We are all called to be holy right where we are, amid everyday realities, despite our weaknesses and the difficulties we may face. By living in this way we can change the world.

The path to holiness lies through questioning everything.

For us is the life of action, of strenuous performance of duty; let us live in the harness, striving mightily; let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out.

Action is a highroad to self-esteem.

The narrow way, the way of holiness, not only leads to life, but it is life. Walking there, serene are our days, peaceful our nights, happy — high above the disorders and miseries of a wretched world—shall be our hourly communion with God; happy — full of assurance, of calm and sacred triumph, shall be our dying hour.

Some men are born committed to action: they do not have a choice, they have been thrown on a path, at the end of that path, an act awaits them, their act.

It’s why action and adventure athletes routinely risk life and limb for their sports and why spiritual ascetics willingly trade creature comforts for a chance to glimpse God.

The universal call to holiness is closely linked to the universal call to mission.

Life is made up of constant calls to action, and we seldom have time for more than hastily contrived answers.

The proof of holiness for the Church is precisely small actions performed each day. The holiness of the "saints next door" is that lived every day by Christians who, in every part of the world, bear witness to Jesus' love and risk their own lives without ever taking into account their own particular interests.

Only holiness will call people to listen now. And the work of holiness is not about perfection or niceness; it is about belonging, that sense of being in the Presence and through the quality of that belonging, the mild magnetic of implicating others in the Presence. This is not about forging a relationship with a distant God but about the realization that we are already within God.

All human happiness or misery takes the form of action; the end for which we live is a certain kind of action.

A new era requires clear thinking about the meaning of honor.
