This nation was founded on the principle of wealth creation. As
a young Henry Clay said in the House of Representatives in 1812,
“It [wealth creation] is a passion as unconquerable as any with which
nature has endowed us. You may attempt to regulate — you cannot
destroy it.” That is supposed to be the federal government’s primary objective.
It is supposed to promote the creation of an environment conducive
to the creation of wealth — not job creation, not bailouts, not subsidies,
not expansion of the federal bureaucracy, and not providing lifetime
support to those who choose not to take advantage of the innumerable
opportunities that exist in this nation for them to create a better,
more productive life for themselves.

Earlier, Lincoln had said that the proposition of equality was the 'central idea' of the founding, from which all its minor thoughts emanated.

Wealth creation is not a mathematical formula, as the truthseeking
quant geeks still want everyone to believe. In the end, their
lack of real-world experience and pride corrupted their mathematical
genius and destroyed them. You may be able to digitize a daVinci,
but that does not make it daVinci. Creating wealth is personal. It is
creating assets, creating value, or whatever act of self-perpetuation that
drives us to create a legacy.
Every human good we enjoy today is, directly or indirectly, a legacy from what the Founders wrought, and Lincoln preserved. That legacy was formed by what the American Founders called an experiment in free government, at the heart of which is a simple, yet radical idea; that under the laws of nature and of nature's God, all men are created equal. When government grows larger, individual liberty declines. I believe that our Founders were committed to the concept of citizen legislators and could not perceive of the potential rise of career politicians.

Then we are free to seek not only the heaping up of material wealth, but a wise and generous distribution of such wealth so as to diminish grinding poverty, and, so far as may be, to equalize social and economic no less than political opportunity.
