Ali bin Abi Talib (Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب) (c. 20 September 601 or 17 July 599 or 600 – 27 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad, fourth Caliph for Sunnis, and the first Imam for Shias, well known for his general knowledge, wisdom and eloquence. Most of the Sufi orders claim their descent from Ali.

Nawf bin Fizala Bakali, the famous scholar of the early Islamic days says that one night he was with Imam Ali. In the middle of the night, Imam Ali got up from his bed, looked for sometime at the stars and inquired of Nawf whether he was awake.
