El salto es exactamente lo que su nombre indica. En la misma estructura del espacio tiempo es imposible viajar más rápidamente que la luz. Es una ley natural que fue descubierta quizá por uno de los antiguos, el tradicional Einstein, a quien se atribuyen demasiadas cosas. Y, como es natural, incluso a la velocidad de la luz se tardarían años, de tiempo en reposo, en llegar a las estrellas. Por ello salimos de la estructura del espacio tiempo para penetrar en el poco conocido dominio del hiperespacio, donde distancia y tiempo carecen de sentido. Es algo así como atravesar un delgado istmo para pasar de un océano a otro, en lugar de permanecer en el mar y rodear un continente para recorrer la misma distancia. Naturalmente, se requiere una gran cantidad de energía para entrar en este "espacio dentro del espacio", como algunos lo llaman, así como muchos y complicados cálculos para asegurar nuevamente la entrada en el espacio-tiempo, en el punto adecuado. El resultado del consumo de tal energía e inteligencia hace posible atravesar distancias inmensas en un tiempo cero. Sólo gracias al salto son posibles los viajes interestelares.
