Too often, in culture as in life, the concept of consciousness, that is, a person's ability to recognise the truth and decide to follow it, is confused with the ultimate peremptory nature of subjective demands. [...] It is the confusion surrounding the false concept of autonomy that causes such profound confusion in today's culture, according to which a person is considered happier the closer they feel to doing what they want. La Chiesa non è una repubblica politica. E' una realtà spirituale incarnata nel tempo, non risponde a criteri puramente umani. L'importante è sempre trovare qualcuno in grado di guidare il popolo di Dio in un determinato momento storico. Conosco papa Leone XIV da poco tempo, attraverso alcuni incontri personali. Sempre gentile, attento alle questioni, riflessivo. L'impressione complessiva e immediata è di un uomo sereno, cioè riconciliato con se stesso perché centrato su Cristo. Credo che sia la migliore premessa per vivere la grande responsabilità.

L'unità del Paese resta una conquista e un ancoraggio irrinunciabili. Ogni auspicabile riforma condivisa a partire da quella federalista, per essere un approdo giovevole, dovrà storicizzare il vincolo unitario e coerentemente farlo evolvere per il meglio di tutti.
