وما كان يخفيان آنذاك أعضاءهما الغامضة

إذ لم يكن خجل الذنب قد ولد بعد , وهو الخجل الكاذب

من بدائع الطبيعة – أواه أيها الشرف الكاذب

يا ربيب الخطيئة ! لكم كدرت البشرية جمعاء

وشغلتها بالمظهر – مظهر الطهر الكاذب –

وأقصيت من حياة الإنسان أهنأ حياة له – حياة

البساطة والبراءة النقية !

كانا يسيران عاريين , ولم يتجنبا عيون

إله أو ملاك , إذ لم يخطر الشر ببالهما

وسارا وقد تشابكت أيديهما فكانا أجمل اثنين

يلتقيان منذ ذلك الحين فى أحضان الحب .

كان آدم أوسم الرجال الذين ولدوا من بعده فكانوا

أبناءه وكانت حواء أجمل بناتها .

وعلى الأرض الخضراء , تحت بعض الأفنان الظليلة

التى تتمايل فتهمس همساتها الناعمة بجوار نبع عذب ,

جلسا يستريحان بعد عناء يوم قضياه

فى العمل الهانئ بالحديقة , زاد من

استمتاعهما بالنسائم الباردة , وزاد من إحساسهما

بالراحة , ومن لذة عطش الأصحاء وشهيتهم ,

فاخذا يتناولان عشاءهما من الفاكهة .

فاكهة ذات رحيق ربانى تحملها الغصون الريانة

وتلقى بها إليهما بينما يسترخيان على

ربوة مكسوة بالزغب الناعم موشاة بالزهور !

كانا يأكلان لب الثمرة ثم ينتهيان إلى القشرة

فيملآنها بالماء من الجدول الرقراق لرى ظمأهما !

كان حديثهما مهذبا وبسماتهما حلوة

وملاطفات الشباب ومداعباته تليق

بالجميلين اللذين ربط بينهما رباط الزواج السعيد

فى وحدتهما . ومن حولهما تتواثب فى مرح

كل دواب الأرض التى استوحشت بعد ذلك , وسكنت كل مكان

فى الغاب والبرية , فى الأجمة والعرين .

كان الأسد يلهو فينهض على مؤخرته وفى يده

يلعب الجدى ! أما الفيل ثقيل الحركة

فيضحكهما باستخدام كل قوته , وتكوين حلقة كاملة

من خرطومه الضخم اللين . وبالقرب منهما كان الثعبان الماكر

يشق طريقه وقد صنع من ذيله عقدة عويصة

ضفرها تضفيرا ! كان يستعرض خبثه القاتل

ويمثل له فلا يلتفتان إليه ! أما سائر الحيوانات فعلى الكلأ

استلقت , وبعد امتلاء بطونها بخير المرعى اتكأت تنظر

أو كانت تجتر طعامها قبيل الرقاد . فالشمس تميل الآن

وتسرع فى فلكها المنحدر

نحو جزائر المحيط , والنجوم فى برج الميزان الصاعد

فى السماء تشرق لتعلن قدوم المساء .
