Yesterday is yesterday. If we try to recapture it, we will only lose tomorrow.

He has wasted the day, he tells himself, he has wasted the day as he has wasted so many days of his life … while that huge work with which he has cheated himself, that enormous novel which would lift him at a bound from the impasse in which he stifles, whose dozens of characters would develop a vision of life in bountiful complexity, lies foundering, rotting on a beach of purposeless effort. Notes here, pages there, it sprawls through a formless wreck of incidental ideas and half-episodes; utterly without shape. He is not even a hero for it.

Yesterday's just a memory; tomorrow's never what it's supposed to be.

The danger comes when we look at a day squandered and conclude that no harm has been done. After all, it was just one day. But add up these days to make a year and then add up these years to make a lifetime and perhaps you can now see how repeating today’s small failures can easily turn your life into a major disaster.

Creativity is the residue of time wasted.

Art indeed is long, but life is short.

Art is long and life is short, and success is very far off.

"He said, "There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.

Life is so short. Why waste a single day of it doing something that doesn't matter, that doesn't try to do something big?

An artist has only his dreams. He has no power.

This abdiction of life demanded of the artist is to be achieved only relatively. Most artists have retired too absolutely; they grow rusty, inflexible to the flow of currents.

The artist discards all theories, both his own and those of others. He forgets everything when he is in front of his canvas.

One evening at dinner, realizing that he had done nobody any favour throughout the entire day, he spoke these memorable words: "My friends, I have wasted a day."
