another and longer variant: I now abandon work. It penetrated so deeply and so gently into me, I feel it and it gives me confidence in myself without effort. Color possesses me. I don’t have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour: Colour and I are one. I am a painter.

My soul lives in a place where the passions have passed by and where I have known them all.

Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment. To such an extent indeed that one day, finding myself at the deathbed of a woman who had been and still was very dear to me, I caught myself in the act of focusing on her temples and automatically analyzing the succession of appropriately graded colors which death was imposing on her motionless face.

And it feels like, finally.

Once you've found some joy, you never want to be without it.

You seized the happiness you have now.

It was truly revealing. The strength of the intervention, the intensity of colors and the happiness of this work, has never left me.

To fill the hour, — that is happiness; to fill the hour, and leave no crevice for a repentance or an approval.
