They had been married for thirty-two years. Did he really know so little about her?

He had known so much about her once -what she thought, how she felt, the reasons for her actions. And now he only knew that he loved her, and all the other knowledge seemed passing from him just as he needed it most.

"Before I go," he said, and paused — "I may kiss her?"

It was remembered afterwards that when he bent down and touched her face with his lips, he murmured some words. The child, who was nearest to him, told them afterwards, and told her grandchildren when she was a handsome old lady, that she heard him say, "A life you love."

He felt now that he was not simply close to her, but that he did not know where he ended and she began.

He knelt and bent lower, till her breath warmed his face, and in a moment his cheek was in contact with hers. She was sleeping soundly, and upon her eyelashes there lingered tears...

I had kissed her at odd times, in out of the way corners, in the manner of a mountain guide, nothing more.

He took one step away, then turned back. “A kiss for luck?”
Arabella’s hesitation before complying was, upon reflection, rather indecently brief.

Like a good and happy man increasing his virtue, he kissed her. She did not move away from him. She remained in the embrace of his right arm, her face nuzzling his shoulder, her eyes closed. He tipped her chin to look and measure opportunity. She could not open her eyes. Honorably he searched, but on her face he met no quarrel.

He kissed her because it came about quite naturally; he found sweetness sleeping still upon her lips, and felt that he had never been away.

It was a light, brief kiss, but it was less an ending than a promise, and he was happy.

'As a general rule you shouldn't expect too much from people darling,' and then I kiss her on the cheek.
