I long for solitude and yet I cannot stand it.

I avoided my own friends and acquaintances, yet the loneliness of my existence was insupportable.

Night is coming on and I am filled with indescribable loneliness. Felt feverish; bathed in a black, silent stream;

Solitude is unbearable for those who can not bear themselves.

My love is selfish. I cannot breathe without you.

I have not a desire but a need for solitude.

Don’t you see that I cannot be composed, I cannot reconcile myself, because there is no other reality but loneliness for me and before I am dragged back into isolation I will clasp and grasp and claw in fright even at you without consciousness — even I — and I am afraid that I cannot survive if I have to go on into myself.

The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.

Please make me empty, if I'm empty then I can receive, if I can receive it means it comes from somewhere outside of me, if it comes from outside of me I'm not alone! I cannot bear this loneliness. Above all it is loneliness.

It must be awful to feel you're not needed.

Thus I am not able to exist either with you or without you; and I seem not to know my own wishes.

It is when we try to grapple with another man's intimate need that we perceive how incomprehensible, wavering and misty are the beings that share with us the sight of the stars and the warmth of the sun. It is as if loneliness were a hard and absolute condition of existence; the envelope of flesh and blood on which our eyes are fixed melts before the outstretched hand, and there remains only the capricious, unconsolable and elusive spirit that no eye can follow, no hand can grasp.

The end of loneliness is when someone needs you. And the world is so full of need.
