The meaning of the river flowing is not that all things are changing so that we cannot encounter them twice but that some things stay the same only by changing.

Moves like a fist through traffic,
Anger and no-one can kill it,
Shoves a little bump to the momentum,
It's just a little lump but you feel it
In the creases and the shadows,
With a rattling deep emotion.
The cool, cool river
Sweeps the wild, wide ocean.

The river is everywhere.

Come sit by my side, Lydia, on the bank of the river.

Man, he lives in the jerks — baby born an' a man dies, an' that's a jerk — gets a farm an' loses his farm, an' that's a jerk. Woman, it's all one flow, like a stream, little eddies, little waterfalls, but the river, it goes right on. Woman looks at it like that. We ain't gonna die out. People is goin' on — changin' a little, maybe, but goin' right on.

Between my sleeping and dreaming,
Between me and the one in me
Who I suppose I am,
A river flows without end.
