I am completely obsessed. And the audience wants that; they pay for that. I don’t want to see someone who’s kind of into it. ... That’s what I care about. That’s all I care about. I don’t care what you do — I just want to see people and talk to people and be around people who are into it.

Being an artist is this kind of occupation in which you have to make people care about your obsession.

It’s quite an obsession to me to communicate at this moment, at this time, with my audience. I don’t only play for them, it’s something I want to give back to them. I feel how each listener in the audience is listening to me, and I feel its warmness, for example, and I give it back to the complete audience. I feel the intensity of hearing, of listening. This is like electricity, and this I give back to the audience. It’s very stimulating.

Be deliberate with your obsessions.

Most makers make things for a human audience. And to engage an audience you have to understand what they need.

In order to win your audience over, avoid constantly throwing out ‘preachy’ content that directly tell the audience what to do. The onus rests on the content creators to package the content in a way that allows the audience choose what lesson they want to learn from it. It is our duty as content creators, film makers or story tellers to set the agenda for how we want to be perceived.

Audiences not only want to stumble across great work, but they, too, long to be creative and part of the creative process. By letting go of our egos and sharing our process, we allow for the possibility of people having an ongoing connection with us and our work, which helps us move more of our product.

You’re a human, you should understand self-obsession.

You can obsess about your customers or you can obsess about beating the competition. Both work, but of the two, obsessing about your customers will take you further.

Every filmmaker have their audience. It’s okay to find what your audience enjoy, if it’s the art for arts slogan, be loyal to them.

When you build an audience, you don’t have to buy people’s attention — they give it to you. This is a huge advantage. So build an audience. Speak, write, blog, tweet, make videos — whatever. Share information that’s valuable and you’ll slowly but surely build a loyal audience.

Make stuff you love and talk about stuff you love and you’ll attract people who love that kind of stuff. It’s that simple.
