The Art of painting is itself an intensely personal activity. It may be labouring the obvious to say so but it is too little recognised in art journalism now that a picture is a unique and private event in the life of the painter: an object made alone with a man and a blank canvas... A real painting is something which happens to the painter once in a given minute; it is unique in that it will never happen again and in this sense is an impossible object. It is judged by the painter simply as a success or failure without qualification. And it is something which happens in life not in art: a picture which was merely the product of art would not be very interesting and could tell us nothing we were not already aware of. The old saying, “what you don’t know can’t hurt you”, expresses the opposite idea to that which animates the painter before his canvas. It is precisely what he does not know which may destroy him.

A painting is above all a product of the artist's imagination, it must never be a copy. If, at a later stage, he wants to add two or three touches from nature, of course it doesn't spoil anything.

Creating a painting is a matter of ensuring that all its parts achieve unity. Though it's a precarious, fragile unity.

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his picture.

Paintings are memories. Memories of the painter who painted them. Memories that can be shared as well. Paintings are things to remember things by.

What makes a painting fascinating is its sincerity. Sincerity is such a rare thing. Most people don't dare to be sincere.

We are all different expressions of one reality, different songs of one singer, different dances of one dancer, different paintings – but the painter is one.

Throughout time painting has alternately been put to the service of the Church, the State, arms, individual patronage, scientific phenomena, anecdote and decoration … all the marvelous works that have been painted, whatever the sources of inspiration, still live for us because of absolute qualities they possess in common. The creative force and the expressiveness of painting reside materially in the colour and texture of pigments, in the possibilities of form invention and organisation, and in the flat plane on which these elements are brought into play.

Each painting is linked to a fundamental drama.

It is from.. ..Renaissance that individualism in painting dates; and I do not believe there is any use in looking in this direction if we desire to bring into being a fresh mural art, one that shall be at once popular, collective and contemporary.

Every work of art must retain something from the first days of creation, something of the smell of earth, or one could even say: something animate.

Every art expression is rooted fundamentally in the personality and temperament of the artist.

Each painter really loves only one painting, the one he would like to make.
