Fogarty training has given us Africans the skills we need to conduct research, document the illness and look at possible interventions that work in Africa. There are people who are alive today because of Fogarty's input in terms of capacity-building, both in America and around the world. Just think about it: the first cases of HIV were described in the early '80s, and in just over 30 years, we are talking of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV on the African continent. Fogarty has changed the face of HIV medicine.

I hope that people will feel educated about the powers of mental health, the struggles, [and] our incredible abilities to survive.

Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.

With education, we will conquer fears and transform Africa.

The giving of love is an education in itself.

Education, they taught me, was not just about personal advancement but also a means to create positive change.

All people need to know how AIDS is transmitted, and every country has an obligation to educate its citizens. This is why every country must also improve literacy, especially for women and girls, so that they can make wise choices that will keep them healthy and safe.

In education dwells the seed of hope: hope for peace and justice, hope for beauty and goodness; hope for social harmony.

HIV/Aids is not a death sentence, once contracted the most important factor in your life is acceptance and living a healthy lifestyle

I had a lot of hope and passion to help people move the needle in their own lives with the help of education and services designed to reduce the disparities.

When I became ANC president in 2007, we needed to deal with the immediate challenge of HIV/Aids decimating our people. Today, millions of lives have been saved and transformed and we no longer see and read about “Aids babies” who die before their fifth birthday. South Africa today has the biggest treatment programme in the world with more than 3.9 million people on treatment by August 2017.

Perhaps because I have lived my life in the public eye, I believe that one of the most powerful ways to combat stigma is to speak out publicly about AIDS. A lot of people don’t know the basic facts about prevention, testing, how the virus is transmitted, and why they shouldn’t be afraid of someone with HIV. If we bring the subject out into the open, I hope that people will eventually realize that HIV should not be a mark of shame.
