हम ग्रीकों और रोमनों को साहित्यिक लोगों के रूप में समझते हैं और इसमें सन्देह नहीं कि वे ऐसे थे, किन्तु यह हम जैसा समझते हैं उससे बिलकुल भिन्न अर्थ में था। हम जिन्हें ग्रीक और रोमन कहते हैं वे मुख्यत: एथेन्स और रोम के नागरिक थे और यहाँ भी जो प्लेटो के संवाद या होरेस के पत्र प्रस्तुत कर सकते थे या पढ़ सकते थे वह बौद्धिक आभिजात्यों का एक छोटा-सा वर्ग था। हम जिसे इतिहास कहते हैं — अतीत की स्मृति — वह हमेशा से ही अल्पसंख्यकों का काम रहा है। करोड़ों-करोड़ लोग बिना सुने गुजर जाते हैं और सिर्फ कुछ ही को वाणी और चिन्तन के संयोग का वरदान मिला है कि वे अतीत के साक्षी बन सकें।
