But the gods give to mortals not everything at the same time.

Such animals as be wants, he will nourish on the dregs and refuse of his own food, and give this as a gift; while those which are useless to him are left in a state of starvation, and deprived of the shelter of the forests, cut down by man.

Si lo encuentra de su gusto, sabré que no me lo debe a mí, sino a ti; si, por el contrario, se queja y encuentra amargo lo que le ofrezco, no perderé la paz, intentaré convencerla de que ese alimento viene de ti y me guardaré muy bien de buscarle otro.

There is always trouble if meat is not divided by lot. Someone immediately says that he has been given more than his share, and tries to hand a piece to someone else. Then there is much arguing and swearing by God, with everyone insisting that he has been given too much, and finally a deadlock ensues which can only be settled by casting lots for the meat – as should have been done in the first place. I have never heard a man grumble that he has received less than his share. Such behaviour would be inconceivable to the Bedu, for they are careful never to appear greedy, and quick to notice anyone who is.

They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

Who feeds a hungry animal feeds his own soul.

Nobody pours stuffing like you do, my friend.

When we are guests at a dinner party, we content ourselves with the food on offer; if anyone were to tell the host to put out fish or cake, he would seem rude. In real life, however, we ask the gods for what they do not give, and this though they have provided us with plenty.

God grants us not always what we ask so as to bestow something preferable.

He makes his cook his merit, And the world visits his dinners and not him.
